Nurrait Program

What is it ?

An outdoor education and intervention program that encourages participants to work on their personal and social skills while developing a healthy lifestyle. The program is an opportunity for participants to connect with members of their own and neighbouring communities. They also get to spend time on their ancestral land accompanied by local guides and elders who can share traditional knowledge and know-how.

How

Each week participants take part in at least one of the following activities:
  • A workout either outside or, in the case of extreme weather, inside;
  • A leadership and cooperation workshop;
  • A workshop on Inuit knowledge, held by a local;
  • A workshop focussing on substance abuse, crime, violence or suicide prevention;
  • A nutrition workshop or group cooking activity.

In addition to these weekly activities, participants take part in a minimum of two camping trips near their communities, and a five-day ski expedition in Nunavik.

By whom

For whom

Team leaders are either teachers or Youth Fusion coordinators.
The program is designed for secondary (0-5) students in Nunavik aged 12 to 18.

When

Where

Following the academic calendar, the program lasts ten months from August to May. The week-long expedition takes place in either March or April.
All fourteen Nunavik communities are invited to participate in the program every year. Whether a community participates or not depends on the amount of interest that exists from potential participants as well as the availability of teaching staff willing to carry out programming.
